Following the Battle of Britain, RAF Fighter Command went over to the offensive, carrying the fight for air superiority to the enemy-held coast of Europe. At the same time, the bulk of the Luftwaffe fighter force had been transferred to Russia or the Middle East, leaving only two German units for the defence of France and the occupied countries. This is the story of the German fighter force, now holding all the advantages of fighting over its own territory, in its defensive and offensive operations against growing Allied might from June 1941 to August 1943.
