This edited volume surveys the development of the major container ports in Asia. It focuses on the three major regions in Asia where port competition is most strongly felt, with contributed chapters from some of the most widely- respected industry commentators and analysts in the region. For each of the container port surveyed, their recent development is outlined and a description provided of the prevailing governance structure and port policy environment within which each operates. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the nature of port competition and co-operation withing the region, focusing on the ostensibly competing ports of Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen, Shanghai and Ningbo, and, finally Busan and Gwangyang. The likely future evolution of the competitive/co-operative environnment is expounded and the potential business and wider economic benefits identified.
