While mainstream society tends to marginalize men who have sex with men, there has been, side by side, a growing recognition of the need to protect the rights and freedom of individuals and groups like these. This work analyzes extensive data collected through formal networks of men who have sex with men in India and, through interactions with numerous homosexual men, places it in a socio-ecological perspective. Sherry Joseph argues that understanding the stress that men who have sex with men experience and their coping strategies assists professionals to work sympathetically with this segment of society. He advocates that professionals, using individual, group and community approaches, can help create a better and more tolerant environment. Social Work Practice and Men Who Have Sex with Men offers an in-depth analysis of sexual orientation, sexual identities, stress and coping strategies of men who have sex with men. Sherry Joseph is Programme Manager (HIV/AIDS) at Futures Group, New Delhi.
