Victor Turner here examines the rituals of the Ndembu in Zambia and develops his concept of aCommunitas,a which he characterizes as an absolute inter-human relation beyond any form of structure. Turner demonstrates how the analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism may be used as a key to understanding social structure and processes. 著者简介

维克多·特纳（1920－1983） 20世纪六七十年代相当活跃和多产的人类学家。他在恢复人们对比较宗教学的兴趣及开创“符号人类学”的研究方面扮演了主要的角色，是与格尔兹（Clifford Geertz）分庭抗礼的象征人类学家。

特纳于1920年出生于苏格兰。1950年4月离开罗得西亚－利文斯通社会学研究所（Rhodes-Livingstone Institute for Sociological Research）之后，他在曼彻斯特大学担任讲师职务，一直到1963年。不过他著述最丰的那几年是在美国度过的：最早是在斯坦福大学，然后在康奈尔大学、芝加哥大学，最后是在弗吉尼亚大学。1983年他在弗吉尼亚大学逝世。其代表作有：《一个非洲社会的分裂与延续》（1957）、《符号森林》（1967）、《苦难的鼓声》（1968）、《仪式过程》（1969）、《戏剧、场和隐喻》（1974）等。
