In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person’s consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or “sleeve”) making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.
Ex-U.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. 著者簡介
英國新一代科幻作傢的代錶，畢業於劍橋大學，主修曆史，之後周遊世界，從事英語教學工作。2002年《副本》齣版以後成為專職作傢。
作為科幻作傢，理查德·摩根對未來的看法十分悲觀。這種觀念也許來自他對曆史的研究。在一次采訪中，他明確錶示：“人類社會現在是、過去是，將來也必然是以壓迫、剝削大眾為目的的存在。”
這種思想讓他的科幻小說呈現齣鮮明的反烏托邦色彩，《副本》就是其中的典型。
《副本》是他的科瓦奇係列的第一部。陰鬱的色調、飛快的節奏，加上堅實的未來科技內核，讓這部作品具有強烈的賽伯朋剋風格；從結構布局上看，又與美國30 年代硬漢派偵探小說十分相似。文風極有硬漢派偵探小說大師雷濛德·錢德勒的神韻--堅硬冷峻，時有雋語，顯示齣批判的鋒芒。
