The Esprit project CHARM has aimed at developing a comprehensive human resource database and a set of software tools allowing the modeling of the human musculoskeletal system and the simulation of its dynamics. This book gives an original synthesis on biomechanical modeling arising from the project. Biomechanical models of soft tissue involve different kinds of mathematical relationships, and their use requires basic knowledge of the theory of nonlinear mechanics as well as of incremental finite element methods. The book provides an overview of the available models, in the light of theoretical mechanics and finite element methods, for the realistic simulation of human muscles, tendons, and skin. It will be useful to any research team beginning such a modeling project.
