Throughout the history of landscape painting, artists have used the singular landscape subject as a common exercise to explore the multitude of light effects. Van Gogh created several scenes using one landscape subject, namely sunflowers; yet, despite the singularity of his subject, he was always successful in emoting a different sense of place. Similarly, Monet is known for his series of single image motifs in his paintings depicting haystacks and cathedrals, Cezanne for his many views of Mont Sainte-Victoire. Now, for the first time in book form, Landscape Meditations examines the process of capturing a unique sense of place from one landscape subject. The book opens with short visual history of same-subject painting, and then proceeds to explore various contemporary approaches to theme painting. The reader is introduced to 12 popular landscape themes, which are discussed in great detail and are accompanied by original paintings from the author.
