In the novel Durango Street, Frank Bonham explores the lifestyle of teenagers in inner-city street gangs. Bonham presents the harsh reality that an unsafe environment can lead teens into gang violence, as they group together to feel protected. Durango Street offers a hopeful view that a dangerous gang can transform itself into a benign social organization with outside intervention.
Durango Street tells the story of Rufus Henry's growth from a criminal gangster to a positive leader of his fellow teenagers. The novel starts as Rufus gets released from a juvenile detention center called Pine Valley. Henry has been incarcerated for stealing a car with a bunch of other boys. He gets out early for good behavior. One of the conditions of his parole is that Rufus must stay out of gangs.

Bonham was the producer of many classic westerns such as "Snaketrack", "Night Raid" and "Durango Kid", writing several hundred westerns and mysteries as well as TV scripts, magazine articles and general children's and young adults' books.
