I was hoping to find some relief towards the end, but the end was little hope, only bitterness. The story is true and so horrible and extreme, the memoir is powerful. A very good reminder of the part of world my loved ones are living in.

A good companion book to Pachinko. This is a harrowing memoir, and what makes it gut-wrenchingly difficult to read is the knowledge that so many people have gone through despondent lives like his; and still, so many more are living in these appalling circumstances.
