Tucked into the mountains and valleys of northern New Mexico are little enclaves of history and tradition-and secrets. Charlie and her office assistant Sally visit one of these towns, Valle Escondido, where they drop in on Sally's friend Laura Armijo. During the visit, Laura receives the shocking news that her friend, Cynthia Martinez, has suffered a miscarriage and died. Privately, Laura wonders if Cynthia's abusive husband Richard caused the miscarriage. Charlie agrees to ask a few questions and see what she can find out.
