A rereading of Philip Roth's late masterpiece never fails to meet my expectation of typical Roth: the mimicry of spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings as well as the profound themes and motifs revealed through the crafty arrangement of the plot. Something new: intricate narrative skills plus the 'marks' left by diseases and age, and family.

Every flash back is a cruel bewilderedness that simulates the downward spiral of obstinate despondency of death. Roth’s masterful portrait of the old man resonates with my grandma who I never grasped a chance to say goodbye. How did she spend her last few days? was she regretful or rather was she content ? I don’t know and never will I anymore T T
