When Adam Bramble saw Mrs. Korngold for the first time, she reminded him of a refugee from a place very far away. But she calmly announced she was the home help his mother had been expecting and moved in with his easy-going family. As an unusually bitter English winter dragged by, strange visitors came to see Mrs. Korngold, each pleading with her to return--but to where was never clear. No one understood what was afoot until winter finally drew to a close and her daughter suddenly appeared.
