ANTHONY BERKELEY was a pen name of Anthony Berkeley Cox (1893-1971), one of the most important figures in the history of British crime fiction. Many of his novels feature the amateur criminologist Roger Sheringham. As well as being the author of many classic detective stories, Berkeley was the founder of the prestigious Detection Club for the finest crime writers.

读到最后，案子似乎已经不重要了，从不同的角度出发用不同的方法去推理得到不同的解答的方式已经不知不觉上升到哲学的问题在讨论推理小说的可能性了。

9年前第一次读完本书只是惊叹于多重解答的精妙结构。今天在有了更大阅读量以及整个背景更全面认识的情况下也有了全新的认识：it is a pure detection game, a game for nobles.作中引用无数的现实案例，印证着维多利亚时期那些古怪犯罪带给侦探小说家们的无穷灵感。圣诞和小肽在伦敦参观犯罪展正有此感：这种犯罪的艺术性在二战后也嘎然而止，和古典侦探小说的衰退其实是一个道理。关于此版本收录的续写的解答，某种程度上都是犯规的。brand的简直不知所云，martin的在brand基础上续写，倒也很有意思。其实从第四解答开始，停在哪里都行...此外想起了当年给（如今每年都要被拿出来鞭尸两次的）推协DV写的剧本初稿，今天看来除了受《匣中的失乐》外也受了这本的很深影响呢...
