《語音學教程》經過反復修訂，凝聚瞭作者畢生的研究和教學心得，已成為語音學經典教材。不同於其他語音學教材，它省去瞭很多概念的理論探討，列舉瞭大量的發音實例和三維語圖，強調瞭發音的“動態”過程，非常適閤初學者學習。

第七版由著名語音學Keith Johnson主筆修訂，保留瞭前版的框架，但每一章節的內容都有不同程度的更新。尤其值得一提的是“要點重述（Recap）”，它並非簡單的內容總結，而是對全章內容的綜述和理論觀照，有助於有興趣的讀者發掘有價值的課題，開展深入的語音學研究。

另外，第七版還搭建瞭一個網絡資源平颱，為紙質教材配備瞭互動式材料，讀者可以通過X光透視視頻觀察發音的姿態，可以對照聲譜圖聽音頻體會發音的細節差異，還可以在綫完成語音練習和測驗。

彼得·賴福吉（Peter Ladefoged）教授，國際著名的語音學傢，美國加利福尼亞大學洛杉磯分校終身教授，曾任美國語言學會會長、國際語音學會會長。
