This is a reference book providing information on a comprehensive range of mental health problems which teachers are often confronted with. Drawing on research and practice in these areas the book considers what schools can do, within the special needs framework, to help pupils with these problems. It also reflects on the role of the mental health services in relation to schools and how schools can adopt a whole-school preventative approach to mental health problems. The authors look at a range of mental health problems including: conduct disorders; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; eating disorders; anxiety disorders, including school phobia; substance abuse; depression; suicide and attempted suicide; soiling and wetting; obsessive-compulsive disorders; schizophrenia; and developmental disorders. The authors also look at situations that can often lead to the development of mental health problems: bullying; divorce and marital conflict; bereavement; physical and emotional abuse; and post traumatic stress.
