用浪漫主義筆觸寫的某個（有代錶性的？）美國監獄——特彆是死囚牢房的——唯美悲傷小諷刺的故事。大傢的名字幾乎都被代號替代：為死囚上訴的“那個女士”；“典獄長”悲傷地看著癌癥彌留的妻子，感受到瞭求死的死刑犯被拖入上訴程序的諷刺；“神父”對於情感的想觸碰又縮手；“白發男孩”像牆壁間的幽魂……最後大傢都從某種意義上得到瞭解脫，從這間叫enchanted的監獄。

比較壓抑的一本書。是以一個關在古老監獄地牢裏的死囚的視角寫的。小說中的人物似乎背後都有著不為人道的悲劇。妻子癌癥晚期最後撒手人寰留下自己孤單一人的典獄長，母親智障以至於自己屢次被人侵犯最後被送去福利機構的the lady，愛上脫衣舞娘卻拋棄她導緻她自殺的牧師，瘋母親被全鎮的男人侵犯連自己的父親是誰都不知道後來連自己也跟著被侵犯的York，新入獄卻被監獄的霸頭看上成為霸頭和貪汙的獄警交易的犧牲品的白發男孩......主人公的身份到最後一刻纔揭曉，我猜對瞭。到最後讀齣瞭筆者對愛的呼籲，這些悲劇人物，哪怕是奸殺犯、連環殺手、小孩殺手也都是渴望著愛的，如果社會、大傢多一些關愛，或許就能減少甚至阻止怪物的誕生和悲劇的發生瞭。

I picked up this book because of the high praises it has recieved. I was also intrigued by the topic: a grim and haunting story takes place in a cold, crimpling prison. Naturally I knew I wasn't heading for an uplifting tale (but was still hoping perhaps ...
