The twentieth century of violence, trauma and shame spurred the rise of memorial mania at the century after. The spread of memorial museums is by any means necessary. Yet, this seemingly civilized collective retrospection has to be vigilant of what WB warns “there is no document of civilization that is not at the same time a document of barbarism.”
评分對眾多非大屠殺（holocaust）紀念館進行縝密的考察之後寫成的頗具闡釋性的書籍。二三四章從展品、圖像和地理位置等物質（material）和視覺（visual）的角度解讀這些實體本身和實體的陳列和建造方式所可能隱含的意義。這種解讀往往不是具體的展品演繹，而是概括性的理論升華。五六七章從政治、個體身份和曆史等抽象（abstract）概念中找尋紀念館敘事的策略選擇和存在的哲學價值，是對之前三章的進一步強化，讓人深思所有這些是否依然與話語和權力相關聯。難能可貴的是，整本書條理十分清晰，有提綱挈領的導論和完善收尾的結論，中間兩大部分的分野也很容易接受和銜接，每章最後更是有結論性的段落進行總結，可見作者的學術寫作素養。
