著者简介

Yung Wing was the first Chinese student to graduate from a United States university (Yale College in 1854). He was involved in business transactions between China and the United States and brought students from China to study in the United States on the Chinese Educational Mission. He became a naturalized American citizen, but his status was later revoked under the Naturalization Act of 1870.

【17th】一片赤诚之心，一生为理想而活。幸得曾国藩的知遇之恩，得以实现心中抱负。促成留美幼童计划，乃近代教育之光。尽管最后却颠沛流离。容闳品格高尚，富有远见，一生所为令人景仰，不能不被先生的诚挚谦卑所打动。

容闳的自传，民国时期商务出版过，《西学东渐记》。从小接受外国教育，英文写作流畅。更重要的是，容闳的经历丰富，书中写的跌宕起伏。

出生于190年前的1828年，第一位从耶鲁毕业的中国人，但如果仅仅如此，是不足以称他为“留学生之父”的。容闳曾为曾国藩、李鸿章工作，前往美国为中国购买机械成立江南机械制造局，送100多名幼童赴美留学，是丁汝昌的好友，马克吐温一生的挚友。他把一生奉献给了中国的自强之路，80岁高龄后仍然为中国革命匿名奔走（已被清廷通缉）。通过他的自传，能够很深切地感受到当时晚清政府的腐败，很多中国保守人士对世界认识的落后，也有大批救亡人士不顾一切为自强中国奉献的勇气。知识开阔眼界，也能间接提升一个人的社会影响力。当然，我个人更为佩服的是他的个人能力。虽然他在美国留学多年，但回国多年后重返美国为清政府购买军械，替将近100名留学儿童安排生活、申请学校，不仅需要他卓越的个人才华，还需要他自信自尊的社交能力。

英文写得真的挺漂亮的。其实容闳已经完全是美国人的性格了，难得仍始终怀有一颗爱国心，个人命运背后体现的是中西文明的冲突。毕生志趣在教育，功莫大焉。
