评分英文中近幾十年來，Julian的傳記不多。這本正文不到120頁，對於隻活瞭32年的羅馬皇帝，而且不想渲染，也就差不多瞭。作者對史料常有辨析，隻是我不熟悉此前的研究，所以沒法說作者的突破和貢獻。文字比較講究，和作者推崇吉本恐怕有些關係。居然看到極少被使用的ululation一詞（96頁）！對Julian沒有太多理想化，也沒有過多猜測。結尾期待有一點點高潮，有一丁點的感慨和抒懷，卻沒有，足見作者的節製。
