If Peanuts creator Charles Schulz says you have one of the best comic strips of all time, who is anybody else to argue with him? Schulz is just one of millions who have fallen in love with Earl the dog, Mooch the cat, and their lovable strip Mutts. Creator Patrick McDonnell's strip now appears in more than 400 daily newspapers -- and his first two books have both undergone multiple reprints. This fall, McDonnell's third book, More Shtuff, will no doubt leave shelves just as fast. The clever and charming perspectives of Mooch and Earl are revealed to readers through conversations the pair have when their owners are absent. Using his lovable kitty accent, Mooch explains that he's standing perfectly still in the yard so the squirrels he wants to chase will think he's a tree. Earl confesses that when he eats cat food he begins to purr and meow. The duo have a variety of adventures together, delighting readers all the while. One minute the two are trying to con the neighborhood butcher out of a few scraps, the next minute they're scurrying to get home to the waiting arms of their loving humans -- Earl's owner, Ozzie, and Mooch's family, Millie and Frank. Mutts also features quite a cast of other characters from Crabby the crustacean to Phoebe the bird. Reminiscent of the cartoons of yesteryear, the unique style and charm of Mutts continues to earn McDonnell the kudos of fellow cartoonists, the public, and prominent national and international organizations. Mutts was named comic strip of the year in 1996 by the National Cartoonists Society. Last year, the strip won Germany's prestigious Max & Moritz Award for the best international comic strip.
