Offering fresh interpretations of classical Greek culture, the book devotes as much attention to social, economic and intellectual aspects as to politics and war. Paul Cartledge and his team of contributors ask what it was like for an ordinary person to partake in "the glory that was Greece." They examine the influences of the environment and economy; the experience of workers, soldiers, slaves, peasants and women; and the roles of myth and religion, art and culture, and science and education. This is a cultural history from the bottom up, which lays bare the far-reaching linguistic, literary, artistic and political legacy of ancient Greece, and seeks justification for Shelley's claim that "we are all Greeks." Paul Cartledge is Professor in Greek History in the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge and is Fellow and Director of Studies in Classics at Clare College, Cambridge. He is the author of several books about ancient Greece, including Spartan Reflections (California, 2001), Hellenistic and Roman Sparta (Routledge, 2001) and Sparta and Lakonia (Routledge, 2002).

唯一的遗憾是太重了，必须要正襟危坐于写字台前认真拜读，对读书环境要求很高 插图特别精美，而且介绍详尽，挺好的 以后，要去哪个国家旅游之前，最好都找一本剑桥插图史来读，普及读本做的很可靠
评分这本书终于读完了，战线拉的太长，以至于读了后面忘了前面。 这本大厚书我暑假背去了希腊旅行，回来后就扔在办公室，一直到寒假前几天才读完。 真的太难读了，晦涩的翻译是第一道障碍。这本书的译者我曾经在大一刚入学听过他的课，讲的是历史是什么。语言诙谐幽默，引人入胜，...
评分The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece, 采用《剑桥插图本古希腊史》，或《剑桥插图版古希腊史》这样的名称，要好一些。尤其是《剑桥插图本古希腊史》，古色古香！
