他的主要作品有《一位女士的画像》《鸽翼》《专使》《金钵记》等长篇小说、《黛西•米勒》《螺丝在拧紧》等中篇小说以及数量众多的短篇小说，此外他还写有相当数量的文学评论、游记、传记和剧本。他的作品聚焦美国与欧洲大陆之间的文化冲突，对20世纪崛起的现代派及后现代派文学有着非常巨大的影响。

1914年第一次世界大战爆发后，由于不满美国政府的中立态度，亨利•詹姆斯于次年愤然加入英国国籍。1916年初，英王乔治五世亲自授予其功绩勋章。同年2月28日，他在伦敦切尔西区病逝，享年73岁。遵照其遗嘱，他的骨灰被安葬在美国马萨诸塞州的剑桥公墓，墓碑上铭刻着“亨利•詹姆斯：小说家、英美两国公民、大西洋两岸整整一代人的诠释者”。
