有一點不太喜歡：作者在前幾章寫瞭太多敘述者自己的傢庭史，後麵看起來聯係並沒有那麼緊密。雖然這本書不能單一地讀成一部懸疑小說，重心還是在Smith和Wilson兩傢人的悲劇上麵，而敘述人自己母親早亡父親娶瞭繼母等等雖然也是他童年記憶很重要的一部分，總覺得占瞭太多筆墨（或者作者是希望通過描寫敘述者自己童年經曆中傢庭不算完滿，來證明敘述者能充分理解比他更不幸的Cletus所經曆的傢庭變故？並對自己當年在學校沒主動跟他講話感到深深自責？）很佩服作者能在這麼小的篇幅裏（幾乎可以算是一本novella)把一件我們已經知道結局的童年往事描寫得如此攪動人心，人物視角的不斷轉換也讓讀者對事件的把握更加全麵，尤其是小狗Trixie的視角和結局還給整本書增添瞭魔幻色彩，兩個傢庭的破裂對所有人造成的影響可見一斑。
