Wilkie Collins is best known for his great mystery and detective novels, but he was also the writer of some very powerful novels of private life, of which The Evil Genius is the finest example. The Evil Genius was Collins's most financially successful novel and enjoyed considerable success with the public. Its subject matter was at the locus of Victorian debates surrounding marriage, divorce, the role of women, sexuality, "free sex" and adultery. Appendices of contemporary documents include announcement of serial publication, reviews, advertisements for governesses, Divorce Court reports, and society news.
