Turning Freud's famous dictum around, Thomas Laqueur posits that destiny is anatomy. Sex, in other words, is an artifice and "Making Sex" tells the story of sex in the west from the ancients to the moderns. 评分很快地重讀瞭一下，這纔真的注意到Laqueur幾乎沒有談到中世紀的狀況，似乎預設從Galen到文藝復興基本上是沒什麼變化的，難怪會引發中世紀學者的批評。可以搭配著看的書是Joan Cadden的The meanings of sex difference in the middle ages.
