This is Anne Sexton's fourth volume of poetry, which contains twenty five poems celebrating love and sensuality. They can be read as the story of a single lover, of a single romance which begins with a joyous rebirth described in the opening poem, "The Touch." But there is in each poem a confrontation with humanity by a woman who cannot train her eye off the real face of that humanity, nor her powers of insight off its almost seasonal cycles. She quotes from a Yeats essay, "Everything that has been shall be again" bringing a reader's attention to the themes of departure, return, recurrence that provide a unique quality of unity and progression. It is Anne Sexton's understanding of what all lovers share, seen this time in the specifics of romance, that carries her work to the furthest limits of poetry and into the realm of great literature.
Anne Sexton (1928 - 1974) is the author of ten collections of poems. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1967.
Some poems are beautifully written; some poems are not as a result of having too much cliche and melodrama. Some lines are relatable and memorable. Some imageries are funky and vivid.
