I've been enchanted by Oriental rugs for a half a century - during which I admired, hunted, sold, swapped, restored and cherished them. The idea of writing this account came from my wife, Doris, who lived through these safe adventures with me. Seeing a pause in my musical composing, she suggested that I would enjoy re-living my experiences by describing them. And I have. Most of the rug photos included here were taken by Doris, some by our son, Dan, and few by me. Candid shots all. I also have a double-biography of my father, Aaron, and myself which was published by Xlibris a few years ago. Both books have divergent subject matter that might aim at two different audiences. The first, Avshalomovs' Winding Way, deals with our years in China-where I grew up and my Father had a brilliant career as a composer who synthesized Chinese musical and literary materials with Western musical media - before going on to describe our work in America. Tripping on Oriental Rugs deals with these as work of art, and then also has a final section on how they relate to classical music. So, readers may be interested in one facet of these books and not the other. But do have a look; you may see how, in both books, one facet shines a light on the second.
