This is the account of one of the main art historians of our time of a trip he had made 30 years earlier to the region of the Pueblo Indians in New Mexico. Warburg wrote it as a lecture while he was in the famous mental clinic of Bellevue in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. In it, Warburg contrasts rational thought and symbolic thought, while explaining the incredible serpent ritual of the Pueblo Indians.
