本书根据英国丰塔纳出版社《现代大师》丛书中的“Saussure”翻译。此书具有较高的学术价值，《现代英语语法》作者之一、伦敦大学校长夸克认为，卡勒对索绪尔的理论作了出色的介绍。大英百科全书和法国百科全书都把此书列入研究索绪尔的参考书目。
