I can not say I didn't enjoy the reading, the writing is beautiful and delicate in any case. However, It's hard to judge whether the writer purposely or subconsciously threw a makeup on the militarism. It's like I am sorry but I don't apologize as a young man who fully devoted himself to his faith even it has been proved to be wrong in the end.

读这本小说有点struggle，用优美流畅的英语语言描写的是古风浓厚的日本故事。这可能是石黑为数不多的日本题材作品。

我理解却并不喜欢。同样是描述战争中的志向抱负，更喜欢宫崎骏的《起风了》里主人公的内心矛盾，在《起风了》中，主人公明晰地知道自己的志向也许会被投入到战争当中被政客所利用，在梦想的实现过程中，他同样背负了很多压力（病妻）和内心的折磨。而这些痛苦的源头毫不迟疑的...  

如果你读外国小说读的多，就知道每个国家的小说翻译过来，多少会有一些味道——所谓翻译腔。这和原作国别的语言特点有关，日语，英语，俄语都有其独特的腔调，就像口音一样难以抹去。石黑一雄虽然是日本人，但他的作品读来没有 日本味，而是一种“日语翻译成英语再转译成汉语”...
