During the mid-1990s, the O.J. Simpson murder trials dominated the media in the United States and were circulated throughout the world via global communications networks. 评分Kellner的media spectacle概念基於Datz的media events和Guy Debord的spectacle概念發展而來，但是相比於後者更專注於傳播學奇觀，相比於前者則有著更加靈活的應用範圍，可以藉以描述某一小圈層或者imagined community中的傳播學現象。相比之下media events的定義要精確和局限得多。
