Louis Holland arrives in Boston in a spring of ecological upheaval (a rash of earthquakes on the North Shore) and odd luck: the first one kills his grandmother. Louis tries to maintain his independence, but falls in love with a Harvard seismologist whose discoveries about the earthquakes' cause complicate everything.

Franzen的寫作風格還是很突齣的：大段的digression，人物特點都是people with problems.比purity綫索連貫的稍微差一點，但還能follow，高潮基本齣現在最後兩百頁。我想知道stites的存在到底是為瞭什麼，他對sweeting-aldren這個公司和地震有關聯麼？我沒看懂這部分。。。
