全书内容共分两部分，第一部分介绍诸神及其神迹，第二部分描写特洛伊之战。神话的迷人之处除与真实历史穿插交织外，神话的主角们也同凡人一般被七情六欲所控制，形象鲜活生动。

在表现众神莫大力量的同时，集中刻画了他们的欲念等身为“人”的感性因素，众神利用前者对后者进行束缚以实现绝对统治，即要求人们臣服于自己的欲望。这就引发了问题：身份的理性与权力的感性间存在多大程度的弥合，如果是由身份赋予权力的话，那么凡人英雄的由来便是无解，反之则奥林匹斯山的存在就无法稳固立足。本书在试图利用一个个故事做出解答的过程中也契合了古希腊弥散的固有悲剧色彩，关于众神的两面挣扎，以及凡人利用血肉铺成的反抗道路。
