The word design presents definitional challenges. Designers tend to view their own
particular sphere of activity as the universe of the human activity of designing. For example,
one of the twelve schools at the University of Pennsylvania is the School of Design. The school does comprise two clearly recognizable design activities—architecture and urban design—but also fine arts and historic preservation. At the same time, the trade journal Design News, with a subscription base of 170,000, focuses quite narrowly on engineering design, a domain not included in Penn’s School of Design. I can’t think of another human endeavor with such confusing intellectual jurisdictions.
