著者簡介

Yves R. Simon was a renowned philosopher and teacher at several American universities, including the University of Notre Dame and the University of Chicago. He published numerous books and articles, many of which remain as classic pieces of political and social philosophy. Professor Simon died in 1961.

這本書是Simon的阿奎那講座Nature and Functions of Authority的擴展版，充實瞭早期的概念與論證，並為權威正當化提供瞭共同善的證成路徑。菲尼斯在其Natural Law and Natural Rights一書中引用瞭Simon的Philosophy of Democratic Government，應該說繼承瞭這個傳統。Simon的貢獻在於提齣瞭一個新的證成方式，也即將權威的正當性奠基在共同善之上，認為權威植根於人的本性與至善，而並非傳統自由主義與無政府主義者所主張的那樣——權威是緣於人性缺陷的必要之惡。
