Sociologist Ashley Mears takes us behind the brightly lit runways and glossy advertisements of the fashion industry in this insider's study of the world of modeling. Mears, who worked as a model in New York and London, draws on observations as well as extensive interviews with male and female models, agents, clients, photographers, stylists, and others, to explore the economics and politics - and the arbitrariness - behind the business of glamour. Exploring a largely hidden arena of cultural production, she shows how the right 'look' is discovered, developed, and packaged to become a prized commodity. She examines how models sell themselves, how agents promote them, and how clients decide to hire them. 评分读完了觉得其实也就那样。但作者太漂亮了，加一分。
评分作者1/4韩裔前模特兼教授，了解行业内幕满有趣的一本。翻了一下models.com，根据作者的分类，当下的edgy look就是短鼻子，翘嘴巴，扁平脸，总结下就是亚洲脸。什么神神秘秘的模特buzz，说白了就是看金主在哪里。
评分原来模特赚钱比想象中少和难多了，读完之后对时尚业的了解精进了很多。模特在作者笔下简直是世上最差的工种之一：没有五险一金，收入无保障（并且商家常常用定价不明的商品当作报酬），对身材严苛的要求，却缺乏对身体的保护和科学监管（你必须要瘦，但没有人会告诉你如何瘦下来），需要时时刻刻付出的身体和情感劳动（甚至需要与客户调情以得到工作，而直男模特也无法幸免需要向同志客户抛去性暗示）。因为是追求外表的行业，对于性别、人种、阶级、年龄的歧视得以被赤裸裸地摆在台面上，明目张胆得有些残忍了。这本书是作者的博士论文，所以读起来完全是社科论文的结构（比如第一章反复讲为什么这个研究相当重要），关键理论还被反复提及，如果当作一般科普读物来读的话未免觉得有点啰嗦。
